How to Add Extra Polish with Drop Caps
by Tim Campbell, editor
D
Drop caps, like the big "D" that starts this article that has been "dropped" into the copy, add a bit of design flair to any professional document. Here's how you can add them to your Word document.

1. Open your document and highlight the letter(s) you want to use as drop cap(s)

2. Go to the "Format" menu and select "Drop Cap"
The Drop Cap menu will appear.

3. Select the "Position" that you want to use
You can choose either "Dropped" or "In margin" for the position of your drop cap(s). Dropped will inset the drop cap into the copy. In margin will place the drop cap in the border, to the left of your column of text.

4. Customize the options
Once you choose the position of your drop cap(s), you can customize the appearance. For a bit of diversity, you can choose to change the font of the drop cap. For example, if you're using sans-serif fonts for your text, you might consider using a serif font for the drop cap. You can change the color of the drop cap(s) before or after changing the character(s) to drop caps.

You can customize how large you want the drop cap(s) to be by setting the "lines to drop." The more lines you indicate, the bigger the drop cap(s) will be. You can also set how much distance you want between the drop cap(s) and the main text.

5. Click "OK" and you're done
If you're not crazy about the result, you can return to the "Drop Cap" menu and adjust the settings or go to the "Edit" menu and choose "Undo." slug
