An Easy Way to Add a Bit of Class
by Tim Donnelly, guest writer
M
Marble, because it's used in classic sculptures and expensive architecture, has become associated with stature, integrity and strength. For these reasons, some people like to use it to accent their printed documents. Here's an easy way you can do it:

1. Open your document and place your cursor where you want the marble to go

2. Choose the "Rectangle" tool from the "Drawing toolbar"
If the Drawing toolbar isn't visible, go to the "View" menu, pull down to "Toolbars" and then select "Drawing." If there's already a checkmark next to it, deselect it. Then go back and reselect it and watch where it appears on your screen. The "Rectangle" tool looks like a small rectangle.

3. Create the shape that you want an make sure it stays selected

4. Go to the "Format" menu and select "AutoShape"

5. Select the "Colors and Lines" tab

6. Click the "Fill" menu and choose "Fill Effects"

7. Select the "Textures" tab and choose a marble texture
There are a wide variety to textures you can choose. You can also click "Other Texture" to use one of your own images as a background in the rectangle.

8. Click "OK"

9. Click the Line "Color" menu and choose "No Line"

10. Click "OK"
You can easily change the marble texture to fine-tune your design, by repeating steps 4 – 10. slug

Helpful Hints

  • To change the shape of your marble, select the rectangle (click on it) and drag one of the eight sizing handles.
  • Don't place type on top of your texture unless, without question, it can be read clearly.
  • As with any design element, use the marble texture sparingly. The last thing you want is a design element that overwhelms your piece's message.
