Getting
Your Colors to Match
by
Jess Fraser, staff writer
Y
ou've inserted your company's logo into your
document. The logo is a particular green color that your boss just loves
(it matches the shutters on his summer home). To create a consistent look,
you want to use the same color for some boxes in your design. How can
you match the color?
1. Get the right
tool
Matching colors is easy with the right software. Download
either Eyedropper
(Windows) or PixelSpy
(Macintosh) and install the program. Both are very small and easy to use.
Eyedropper is completely free and PixelSpy is $5 shareware (you're on
your honor).
2. Open your document
and navigate to the graphic.
3. Start the software
application you downloaded
4. Find the color
you want to use
Using the software and your mouse, point to the color on
your screen you want to use. Once you've done that, write down the RGB
values (numbers).
5. Click on the
box you want to color
If you need help, you can learn how to add an AutoShape in
this article.
6.
Go to the "Format" menu and choose "AutoShape"
A box will appear.
7. Choose the
"Colors and Lines" tab
8. Click the Fill
"Color" menu and select "More Colors"
9. Click the "Custom"
tab and type the RGB values in the corresponding RGB boxes.
10. Click "Okay"
and then click "Okay" again
You're done!

Helpful
Hints
- Earlier versions of Word (97 and 98) will allow you to add custom colors
for AutoShapes only. Later versions give you the option to add custom font colors
as well. You can do this by going to the "Format" menu, choosing "Font"
and selecting "Color." From there, select "More Colors," click
the "Custom" tab and type the RGB values.
- Both Eyedropper and PixelSpy are easy-to-use and come with simple instruction
guides. You can also find helpful information on their websites.
