Long Documents? Give Me a Break!
by Jess Fraser, staff writer
G
Getting a handle on long documents can be difficult unless you have great program. Fortunately, Word offers a lot of great features to help you break documents up into sections.

How Do You Know?
If you look at the bottom left area of any open Word document, you will see an area that notes the page number, the number of pages in the document as well as the section that you're in.

The Benefits of Sections
When you create a document with different sections, it's like having the best of both worlds — separate documents but linked together and in one file. Different sections in a document can contain pages with different columns, margins or even different orientation (some horizontal, some vertical).

To automatically create a new section in a Word document:
1. Go to File > Page Setup.
2. Select the "Layout" tab and change your settings as needed.
3. Select the "Apply to" option and choose "This point forward."
4. Click "OK"
As a result, Word will create a new section using your new settings from that point forward.

More Breaks
You can also insert a section break as you need to without having to change the document settings. Go to Insert > Break, select a "break," click "OK" and you're done. slug

Helpful Hints

Odd Page: Starts a new section on the next odd-numbered page.
