Working with Headers and Footers

If you're working on a very long document with lots of different sections, you may want to consider adding headers and/or footers to your pages. They're very helpful to readers to make sure they understand where they are in relation to the rest of the document.

Head to Toe
Headers and footers are frequently used to indicate document titles, section titles, dates and page numbers. Here's how to add them:

1. Go to View > Header and Footer.

2. The Header and Footer toolbar will appear. A header box will appear at the top of the page. Us this box to type the information that you want to use and format it as necessary.

3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to input the information into the Footer area.

4. Click "Close" when you're done.

A Little Change
There are cases where you may want certain headers and footers to be different (perhaps on alternating pages or in different sections). Here's how you can do it.

2. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the "Page Setup" icon (it looks like an open book).

3. On the Page Setup window, select the "Layout" tab and select the "Different first page" box. You can also select the "Different odd and even" box if you want odd and even pages to have different headers and/or footers. Click "OK."

4. On the Header and Footer toolbar, use the "Show Previous" and "Show Next" buttons to move from page to page to alter the appropriate page headers and/or footers.

5. Click "Close" on the toolbar when you're done. slug

Helpful Hints

  • If you want to add page numbers to your document, use the page icon (a page with a # symbol) on the Header and Footer toolbar. Then you can format it as needed. file folder
  • The header and footer areas come already formatted with a middle tab and a right tab. You can use these tabs or delete them by dragging them away from the ruler.
  • You can edit headers and/or footers by going to View > Header and Footer and making the changes you want.
